Google Inc. Research Reports
On August 22, 2014, Bloomberg reported that Google Inc. (Google) is acquiring Los Gatos, California-based startup Gecko Design Inc. (Gecko) to add product design capabilities to its research lab, Google(X). According to Gecko's website, it designs products for clients including Hewlett-Packard Co., furniture maker Herman Miller Inc. and wearable-device provider Fitbit Inc. Bloomberg stated that the terms of the transaction were not disclosed. "This is an incredible opportunity for everyone at Gecko. We are very excited and honored to join Google(X) and work on a variety of cutting edge projects," said Gecko's President and Owner Jacques L. Gagne on its website. Verizon Communications Inc. Research Reports
On August 25, 2014, Verizon Communications Inc. (Verizon) announced that it plans to expand the on-site green energy program that it launched in 2013 by investing around $40 million. Verizon said it will install 10.2 megawatts of new solar power systems at eight Verizon network facilities in New York, California, Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey. "Based on its existing solar power capacity and on-site generating systems, combined with its new solar energy expansion plans for 2014, it's clear that Verizon is on a path to become the solar-power leader in the U.S. telecom industry," said Rhone Resch, the President and CEO of Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). Baidu, Inc. Research Reports
On August 25, 2014, the stock of Baidu, Inc. (Baidu) gained 1.22% to end the session at $216.80. During the session, the stock opened at $214.49, which was also its low of the day, and touched an intra-day high of $218.71. Over the last one month, the Company's stock has declined by 4.28%, compared to the Dow Jones Industrial Average which increased 0.69% during the same period. On August 25, 2014, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) announced the results of a global study which found that 80% of leading organizations are forming new partnerships with "citizen developers," industry professionals operating outside the scope of enterprise IT, to drive innovation across cloud, analytics, mobile and social technologies. The study, titled "Raising the Game: The IBM Business Tech Trends Report," found that around 40% of all the organizations still report moderate-to-major skills gaps across cloud, analytics, mobile and social technologies. The report revealed that leading organizations are filling these gaps via partnerships with citizen developers. In addition to turning to citizen developers, these organizations are twice as likely to turn to academia for product development and 70% are more likely to engage with start-ups for execution.
