Spatial Teleconferencing with WebRTC and IoT
While great strides have been made relative to the video aspects of remote collaboration, audio technology has basically stagnated. Typically all audio is mixed to a single monaural stream and emanates from a single point, such as a speakerphone or a speaker associated with a video monitor. This leads to confusion and lack of understanding among participants especially regarding who is actually speaking. Spatial teleconferencing introduces the concept of acoustic spatial separation between conference participants in three dimensional space. This has been shown to significantly improve comprehension and conference efficiency.
In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Alan Kraemer, CTO of ComHear, to introduce the concept of a small speaker unit placed in front of the conference participant that can create a full three dimensional sound field with user interaction supporting free placement of individual conference participants anywhere within that field. This is integrated with WebRTC to create a seamless interactive video or teleconference experience that, from an acoustic standpoint, closely resembles the experience of a live meeting in a conference room. In addition, he will demonstrate individual dynamically assigned rooms that support sidebars and subconferences.
Alan Kraemer, CTO of ComHear, Inc., has over 29 years of experience in a wide range of technology-based fields.
As Vice President of Engineering for Technology Marketing Inc., he and his team created the architecture for and designed a wide variety of computers and computer- based products for major corporations including British Telecomms and Litton Industries. At Northrup Electronics he was Director of Software Engineering for the MX Missile guidance system. Following Northrop he joined AST Research as Executive VP of Engineering responsible for the team that developed the highly successful "Premium" line of PCs as well as the EISA bus, which obsoleted IBM's MicroChannel. In 1993 he joined with one of the founders of AST, Tom Yuen, to start SRS Labs, a branded audio technology company that licensed audio signal processing technology to virtually every consumer electronics manufacturer. There Alan obtained over 25 patents in the field of audio signal processing and created the Multi-Dimensional Audio initiative (MDA) for channel free object based audio. In 2012 SRS Labs was sold to DTS Inc. for over $150 million dollars.
