SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/28/14 -- On September 7, 2014, San Diego's Pacific Beach will earn its title as the Rio de Janeiro of North America. More than 60,000 people are expected to celebrate Brazilian Day at the annual culture and music festival. Join SanDiego.com for this event, which has been recognized as the largest Brazilian celebration on the West Coast.
You'll find the fun on Garnet Street, between Everts Street and Bayard Street, in Pacific Beach, San Diego. The festival starts at 11 a.m. and is slated to end at 7 p.m.
The popular event features the food, sights and sounds of Brazil. A carnival-style parade starts off the day with floats and street performers. Keep your eyes open for demonstrations of Capoeira, the exciting Brazilian activity that is part dance, part acrobatics, part percussion and part martial art. The culture and music festival serves up musical acts that are as diverse as the large nation itself. You'll want to arrive early and get a good spot to watch the music and dancing.
The event is free, but you may want to cash in on some great food and shopping. There's a street fair with 150 vendors where you can find the flavors and crafts of the largest South American nation. If you bring the little ones, you will find a kids zone just for them. Despite the large crowd, this is definitely a family event.
Mestre Ailton Nunes da Mangueira will lead the Brazilian Day Bateria, a band of drummers in the great Brazilian tradition. Batala Los Angeles will also be on hand to add their own band of drummers to the party. Batala Los Angeles specializes in international samba reggae.
The festival headliners are Carla Visi and Batukaxe. A singer and songwriter, Ms. Visi has enjoyed fame in Brazil and on international tours. The bands of Andre Monari and Vic Magnolia are also on tap to entertain the crowd. Banda Cruz, another festival performer, is a four-man rock band that blends soulful sounds with a modern edge. Then there are the fun sounds of the the Caribelinq Samba Funk, and the Pedrinho CDO. DJs Potira and Chris Brazil will add their own spin on this celebration of all things Brazilian. You can bring a chair, but this music probably won't let you sit down.
The fun starts early for those who attend the Tem Que Ter Axe. The 2014 Annual Capoeira Mandinga San Diego Tem Que Ter Axe Event starts on September 4 at the Capoeira Mandinga studios. This convention is designed for everyone, even beginners, who want to strengthen their abilities in Brazilian dance, percussion, martial arts and acrobatics. It gets participants ready for the big carnival parade and for festival performances.
Brazilian Day is sponsored by the Brazilian Institute for Arts and Culture. This non-profit institute has made it a mission to bring the arts of Capoeira, Samba, Percussion, and Afro-Brazilian dance to underprivileged children and teens in San Diego. So if you come out for the music, you can have a great time while supporting a good cause.
