NEW YORK, Sept. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Chad Stone, the chief economist at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, is attempting to quell the fears perpetrated by what he calls "myths" that Social Security Disability payments are out of control in his article published in U.S. News and Worlds Reports (The Myth of 'Out of Control' Disability Benefits, August 23, 2014). According to Stone, while it is true that a rising number of people are receiving Social Security Disability benefits, these developments were mostly anticipated and should be manageable if policy makers make smart decisions.
Stone claims that Social Security Benefits are still hard to obtain, and a higher share of applications are being rejected than before, so the idea that the system is out of control granting benefits to anyone and everyone is simply untrue. Stone reminds his readers that Social Security Disability is a vital insurance program that provides for people and their loved ones who are truly in need. Stone proposes that if policy makers increase the share of payroll taxes going to disability insurance and cut the share going to old age and survivors insurance that both programs would be on track to pay full benefits until 2033. Ultimately, if Congress acts wisely, this invaluable program will continue as designed.
"I hope everyone reads this article," said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP. "As an attorney, I know the direct, invaluable effect Social Security Disability benefits have on the lives of those who need them and we absolutely need to keep this program in place to insure that we provide for people who are suffering and unable to work. Congress should do everything in their power to keep Social Security Disability benefits alive and well and people should make sure their representatives know this is a top priority.
"Unfortunately, as the article highlights, obtaining Social Security Disability benefits is not so easy as critics would have most people believe, and the majority of initial claims are actually denied, even for those who truly need and deserve benefits. This is where having the right advocate by your side can make all the difference. An experienced, knowledgeable attorney will know how to navigate the Administrative claims system and ultimately have a valid claim approved. This is not a fight people should go at alone, especially when they are already vulnerable due to illness or injury. And finally, there is no need to worry about being able to afford an attorney because Social Security Disability lawyers are paid on contingency, meaning you only ever pay a fee if your claim is approved and you receive your benefits."
So, if you or a loved one is suffering from an illness or injury that is preventing you or them from working in New York, you should contact a New York Social Security Disability lawyer to receive information about the your rights under the law and how to pursue claims for the benefits you deserve.
