CHICAGO and LOS ANGELES, Sept. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Nancy Hoyt, a counseling psychologist and educator who lives in Chicago and Redondo Beach, Calif., is the new board chair of the nation's leading end-of-life choice organization, Compassion & Choices. She and her husband, Bob Hoyt, have been involved with Compassion & Choices for more than a decade.
"Nancy understands the importance of education and psychology in any reform movement," said Compassion & Choices President Barbara Coombs Lee, an attorney who was an ER and ICU nurse for 25 years. "Her expertise in these two critical areas will help us make great strides to expand end-of-life choices."
Nancy has worked with adolescents in underserved Chicago schools. She also is vice president of the board of directors for the Civic Leadership Foundation, which helps students develop the skills and experiences necessary to become engaged civic leaders. Nancy has served on many strategic planning committees in both secondary schools and colleges in New York and Chicago.
"I relish this opportunity to use my strategic planning skills to build on Compassion & Choices' great work to advance end-of-life choice," said Hoyt, who received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MA in organizational and counseling psychology from Teacher's College, Columbia University. "It all begins with educating people about a subject that they psychologically are reluctant to discuss. The good news is that they feel relieved once they do it."
Death with dignity is expressly legal in Oregon, Washington, Montana, Vermont and New Mexico. Compassion & Choices currently has campaigns to bring aid in dying to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey. Even in states without aid-in-dying laws, there are options to ensure that no one suffers needlessly at life's end.
