ATLANTA, Sept. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Health Connect South, a new Atlanta-based organization, is promoting greater collaboration between health silos in Georgia and the Southeast with the goal of fostering future innovation, discovery and improved healthcare. This vision will come to life at Health Connect South's inaugural event on Sept. 15 at the Woodruff Arts Center, at which 500-700 top doctors, students, executives and entrepreneurs are expected to attend.
Founded by CEO Russ Lipari in 2013, HCS is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit that will bring together some of the nation's most influential leaders in health and enterprise to share ideas, resources and practices under the banner of mutually beneficial collaboration. Lipari envisions HCS as an emblematic launch pad for innovation and discovery fueled by open communication among the industry's top decision-makers.
"It's no secret that we as Atlantans are privileged to live in a city where such a vast array of health assets reside" said Lipari. "However, there is surprisingly little interdisciplinary clarity around areas of focus, impact, needs and capacity among them. This is a problem HCS aims to solve."
In order to strengthen and shape Atlanta's health landscape, HCS will facilitate conversations by highlighting the city's health assets while underlining the potential of open collaboration between such a rich makeup of organizations and institutions. These collaborations have the potential to drive improved care, access, and costs in Atlanta while making the city a global hub for health innovation. This exciting prospect means more jobs, companies, and other economic benefits for the area.
"Fostering collaboration across the healthcare ecosystem is critical to growing jobs in metro Atlanta," said David Hartnett, vice president, Bioscience-Health IT Industry Development, Metro Atlanta Chamber. "Connecting top innovators and our community providers through Health Connect South is an important step in advancing the healthcare industry in our region."
HCS counts the likes of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Cancer Society, Task Force for Global Health, UPS, the Technology Association of Georgia, The Coca-Cola Company and the Carter Center as its sponsors and will feature keynote speeches and breakout sessions from the industry's top thinkers, including:
- Charlie Stokes, President of the CDC Foundation
- Dr. Dennis Liotta, Executive Director of the Emory Institute for Drug Development
- Dr. David Satcher, 16th Surgeon General of the United States
- Dr. Mark Rosenberg, President & CEO of The Task Force for Global Health
- Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society

Developing software for the Internet of Things (IoT) comes with its own set of challenges. Security, privacy, and unified standards are a few key issues. In addition, each IoT product is comprised of at least three separate application components: the software embedded in the device, the backend big-data service, and the mobile application for the end user's controls. Each component is developed by a different team, using different technologies and practices, and deployed to a different stack/...

Cloud computing delivers on-demand resources that provide businesses with flexibility and cost-savings. The challenge in moving workloads to the cloud has been the cost and complexity of ensuring the initial and ongoing security and regulatory (PCI, HIPAA, FFIEC) compliance across private and public clouds. Manual security compliance is slow, prone to human error, and represents over 50% of the cost of managing cloud applications. Determining how to automate cloud security compliance is critical...

You have your devices and your data, but what about the rest of your Internet of Things story? Two popular classes of technologies that nicely handle the Big Data analytics for Internet of Things are Apache Hadoop and NoSQL. Hadoop is designed for parallelizing analytical work across many servers and is ideal for the massive data volumes you create with IoT devices. NoSQL databases such as Apache HBase are ideal for storing and retrieving IoT data as “time series data.”

Clearly the way forward is to move to cloud be it bare metal, VMs or containers. One aspect of the current public clouds that is slowing this cloud migration is cloud lock-in. Every cloud vendor is trying to make it very difficult to move out once a customer has chosen their cloud. In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Naveen Nimmu, CEO of Clouber, Inc., will advocate that making the inter-cloud migration as simple as changing airlines would help the entire industry to quickly adopt the cloud wit...

As-a-service models offer huge opportunities, but also complicate security. It may seem that the easiest way to migrate to a new architectural model is to let others, experts in their field, do the work. This has given rise to many as-a-service models throughout the industry and across the entire technology stack, from software to infrastructure. While this has unlocked huge opportunities to accelerate the deployment of new capabilities or increase economic efficiencies within an organization, i...

WebRTC is about the data channel as much as about video and audio conferencing. However, basically all commercial WebRTC applications have been built with a focus on audio and video. The handling of “data” has been limited to text chat and file download – all other data sharing seems to end with screensharing. What is holding back a more intensive use of peer-to-peer data? In her session at @ThingsExpo, Dr Silvia Pfeiffer, WebRTC Applications Team Lead at National ICT Australia, will look at di...
