Minister Finley Highlights Harper Government's Commitments to Defence at DEFSEC

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/04/14 -- Public Works and Government Services Canada

The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, delivered the keynote address tonight at the 13th Annual Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Nova Scotia gala dinner, as part of the 2014 Canadian Defence Security and Aerospace Exhibition Conference (DEFSEC) in Halifax.

Minister Finley specifically focused on the Government of Canada's commitment to Canadian men and women in uniform. She highlighted that since she came to office in 2006, defence spending in Canada has increased by 27 percent. This has allowed for the delivery of important defence procurement projects over the past eight years, which include C-130J Hercules tactical lift aircraft, C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft, Chinook medium-to-heavy lift helicopters and Leopard II tanks. Other major capital projects have advanced, such as the Light Armoured Vehicle upgrade and the Aurora aircraft modernization.

The Minister specifically cited progress underway for the Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels and Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships, as part of the $36-billion National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy, which has revitalized the shipbuilding industry in Canada.

During her remarks, Minister Finley highlighted a number of changes introduced by the Government of Canada to help improve the competitiveness of Canada's aerospace and defence industries, including streamlining the Controlled Goods Programs and confirming permanent funding for the Build in Canada Innovation Program at $40 million per year, which includes a military component.

Referring to Canada's new Defence Procurement Strategy, launched in February of this year, the Minister applauded industry representatives for their efforts to date in helping to ensure its successful implementation. She added that there is no better place in the world to invest than Canada, and companies who make that commitment will have a competitive advantage in bid evaluations.

Quick Facts

-- The National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy is expected to create an
estimated 15,000 jobs, resulting in over $2 billion in annual economic
benefits for Canada for 30 years.

-- The Government of Canada has already invested in over 70 projects
throughout the first three years of the Build in Canada Innovation
Program. Another 72 projects have been identified for potential testing
    this year.

-- The Controlled Goods List has been streamlined to better align it with
that of the U.S. This is positive news for Canadian companies, who are
now able to be more competitive by operating on a level footing with
foreign competitors. No compromise to national security has been made
    with the changes.

Quotes

"The launch of Canada's new Defence Procurement Strategy marks the most significant and fundamental shift for the federal government in 30 years when it comes to purchasing equipment for our men and women in uniform.

"Our Government's priorities continue to be job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity and nowhere are those more obvious than here in Halifax at Irving Shipbuilding. The work to build ships here in Canada with thousands of new jobs is well underway-and we will be cutting steel on the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships and the Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels in 2015."

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...

Major trends and emerging technologies – from virtual reality and IoT, to Big Data and algorithms – are helping organizations innovate in the digital era. Architecture is the key that underpins and ties all these efforts together. In the digital age, it’s important to invest in architecture, extend the enterprise footprint to the cl...
HyperConvergence came to market with the objective of being simple, flexible and to help drive down operating expenses. It reduced the footprint by bundling the compute/storage/network into one box. This brought a new set of challenges as the HyperConverged vendors are very focused on their own proprietary building blocks. If you want to scale in a certain way, let's say you identified a need for more storage and want to add a device that is not sold by the HyperConverged vendor, forget about it...
