Transfer Deadline Day: Kicking the #FaxOutOfFootball

Monday night brought the curtain down on the busiest day in the football calendar, the close of the European summer transfer window. The day of the year when Jim White is unleashed on our screens, and fax machines are worked as hard as the staff at the FA. Now that the dust has settled, we can reflect on the activities as they happened.

The day started on Twitter with talk of a plane flying over Old Trafford. Was it Radamel Falcao landing from Monaco?

There was a Moyes Out-style protest being staged to highlight the archaic use of the fax machine in football. Fans will know of the technology that's continually being implemented on the field to improve the game – like goal line technology and vanishing spray. However, the business of sport lags behind other industries when it comes to signing contracts – and most other paperwork – that are still processed manually via fax.

We have followed the topic closely in the past, with players like Yevhen Konoplyanka, Fabio Coentrao, Joao Moutinho and Wilson Palacios falling through at the last moment due to the reliance of outdated, manual, paper-based technology that prevented the completion of paperwork in time for the transfer deadline. There's a better way.

Javier Hernandez swapped Old Trafford for the Bernabeu early on in the day, with Daley Blind coming in from Feyenoord. Meanwhile, DocuSign FC showed just how easy it could be to sign a football contract electronically…

Hull and Crystal Palace were busy throughout, each acquiring 3 new players on Deadline Day. And Mario Balotelli eventually completed his high profile switch to Liverpool…

However it was Radamel Falcao that dominated the day’s headlines with his deal to Man Utd struggling to get over the line, eventually moving on loan at 1.30am following the departure of Danny Welbeck to Arsenal.

All in all, Premier League sides spent a record £835 million on 165 players in this latest transfer window. Manchester United were this summer's biggest spenders, splashing around £150m on the likes of Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao. On Tuesday morning, as students around the country woke up with their Transfer Deadline Day Drinking Game hangovers (my favourite is Jim White bingo) I imagine there will be a lot of football managers with equally sore heads having missed out on key targets. Rumors of a missed transfer circled this week, with Celtic appearing to lose out on Man City striker John Guidetti as the paperwork failed to be submitted in time.

So in January, when we’re once again greeted with the excitement of the transfer window, lets hope that our clubs don’t once again fall at the final hurdle, and kick the #FaxOutOfFootball.

"When we talk about cloud without compromise what we're talking about is that when people think about 'I need the flexibility of the cloud' - it's the ability to create applications and run them in a cloud environment that's far more flexible,” explained Matthew Finnie, CTO of Interoute, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 20th Cloud Expo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
When growing capacity and power in the data center, the architectural trade-offs between server scale-up vs. scale-out continue to be debated. Both approaches are valid: scale-out adds multiple, smaller servers running in a distributed computing model, while scale-up adds fewer, more powerful servers that are capable of running larger workloads. It’s worth noting that there are additional, unique advantages that scale-up architectures offer. One big advantage is large memory and compute capacity...
The financial services market is one of the most data-driven industries in the world, yet it’s bogged down by legacy CPU technologies that simply can’t keep up with the task of querying and visualizing billions of records. In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Karthik Lalithraj, a Principal Solutions Architect at Kinetica, discussed how the advent of advanced in-database analytics on the GPU makes it possible to run sophisticated data science workloads on the same database that is housing the rich...

IoT solutions exploit operational data generated by Internet-connected smart “things” for the purpose of gaining operational insight and producing “better outcomes” (for example, create new business models, eliminate unscheduled maintenance, etc.). The explosive proliferation of IoT solutions will result in an exponential growth in the volume of IoT data, precipitating significant Information Governance issues: who owns the IoT data, what are the rights/duties of IoT solutions adopters towards t...

You know you need the cloud, but you’re hesitant to simply dump everything at Amazon since you know that not all workloads are suitable for cloud. You know that you want the kind of ease of use and scalability that you get with public cloud, but your applications are architected in a way that makes the public cloud a non-starter. You’re looking at private cloud solutions based on hyperconverged infrastructure, but you’re concerned with the limits inherent in those technologies.
Both SaaS vendors and SaaS buyers are going “all-in” to hyperscale IaaS platforms such as AWS, which is disrupting the SaaS value proposition. Why should the enterprise SaaS consumer pay for the SaaS service if their data is resident in adjacent AWS S3 buckets? If both SaaS sellers and buyers are using the same cloud tools, automation and pay-per-transaction model offered by IaaS platforms, then why not host the “shrink-wrapped” software in the customers’ cloud? Further, serverless computing, cl...
