Taking It to the Streets: Quin Hotel Launches Fall Exhibition Schedule With French Street Artist SP38 on September 17th

'ESCAPE (Legalize Freedom)' Exhibition Curated by DK Johnston Opens With Artist Salon

NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 09/10/15 -- It may be unusual for a luxury hotel in midtown Manhattan to embrace the creative inspiration of international street artists, but the Quin is not a typical luxury hotel. Instead, this quintessential New York property has quickly built a reputation for compelling art programming that boldly complements its refined ambiance. The Quin recently announced that its fall exhibition schedule will launch on September 17th with an artist salon featuring acclaimed French street artist SP38 making his New York City debut. SP38 will feature his iconic text-based works, artfully deconstructing the 20-foot walls of the hotel, as well as providing a special presentation of his work in the field on the video art wall.

SP38 is a French street artist, painter, and performer who has been based in Berlin for the past 20 years. He papers the walls of his city, and many others across the globe, with what he calls "urban poetry." Painting quickly and repetitively, he reproduces the same motifs and texts on posters in order to paste them in various locations. The work is not identical, however, and includes tiny imperfections by design, reinforcing the handmade nature of the work.

SP38 mixes silk-printing and painting techniques applied on posters. His words are juxtaposed with symbols such as golden rabbits or blue planes that multiply on his posters as patterns. He has said he imagines that these could even be in the style of wallpaper in children's bedrooms. Coming from a tradition of the Lettrist movement or of the "Affichistes" artists such as Jacques Villéglé or Raymond Hains who created their own alphabets, SP38 created his own typography. Adding a limited range of four colors and simplified images to his letters as a graphic trademark, SP38 makes statements about serious matters very casually. "ESCAPE," "OCCUPY," "MADE IN DREAM," "SLAVES," "VIVE LA CRISE," "VIVE LA BOURGEOISIE," "NO PROPAGANDA," "I DON'T WANT TO BE U'RE FRIEND ON FACE-BOOK," amongst others, are woven into the urban landscape. The freshly printed aspect of his posters echoes the subjects of slogans that are right of-the-moment.

As with artists like Jenny Holzer, whose main focus is to spread words or ideas in the public or urban space, SP38 maintains that, "Art must be outside," although he is fond of, in gallery shows, "bringing the outside in." His provocative and lighthearted slogans, his humor -- fraught with irony and sarcasm -- enable him to incite radical thinking without aggression. He wants to trigger a reaction, a reflection, and potentially some involvement. He wriggles out of his provocation without annoying the viewer. Lightheartedness makes the catchy and lapidary slogans act as catalysts for a spirited debate, free from hostility.

The artist salon featuring SP38 at the Quin, located at 57th Street and Sixth Avenue, is scheduled from 6:00pm - 8:00pm on Thursday, September 17th. The ESCAPE (Legalize Freedom) exhibition will be on view to the public in the Quin's lobby through mid-October. Information on pre-show sales is available by emailing [email protected]. Serverless applications increase developer productivity and time to market, by freeing engineers from spending time on infrastructure provisioning, configuration and management. Serverless also simplifies Operations and reduces cost - as the Kubernetes container infrastructure required to run these applications is automatically spun up and scaled precisely with the workload, to optimally handle all runtime requests. Recent advances in open source technology now allow organizations to run Serv...
Docker is sweeping across startups and enterprises alike, changing the way we build and ship applications. It's the most prominent and widely known software container platform, and it's particularly useful for eliminating common challenges when collaborating on code (like the "it works on my machine" phenomenon that most devs know all too well). With Docker, you can run and manage apps side-by-side - in isolated containers - resulting in better compute density. It's something that many developer...

While a hybrid cloud can ease that transition, designing and deploy that hybrid cloud still offers challenges for organizations concerned about lack of available cloud skillsets within their organization. Managed service providers offer a unique opportunity to fill those gaps and get organizations of all sizes on a hybrid cloud that meets their comfort level, while delivering enhanced benefits for cost, efficiency, agility, mobility, and elasticity.
Kubernetes as a Container Platform is becoming a de facto for every enterprise. In my interactions with enterprises adopting container platform, I come across common questions: - How does application security work on this platform? What all do I need to secure? - How do I implement security in pipelines? - What about vulnerabilities discovered at a later point in time? - What are newer technologies like Istio Service Mesh bring to table? In this session, I will be addressing these commonly asked ...

Skeuomorphism usually means retaining existing design cues in something new that doesn’t actually need them. However, the concept of skeuomorphism can be thought of as relating more broadly to applying existing patterns to new technologies that, in fact, cry out for new approaches. In his session at DevOps Summit, Gordon Haff, Senior Cloud Strategy Marketing and Evangelism Manager at Red Hat, discussed why containers should be paired with new architectural practices such as microservices rathe...
In a recent survey, Sumo Logic surveyed 1,500 customers who employ cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). According to the survey, a quarter of the respondents have already deployed Docker containers and nearly as many (23 percent) are employing the AWS Lambda serverless computing framework. It's clear: serverless is here to stay. The adoption does come with some needed changes, within both application development and operations. Th...

With the rise of Docker, Kubernetes, and other container technologies, the growth of microservices has skyrocketed among dev teams looking to innovate on a faster release cycle. This has enabled teams to finally realize their DevOps goals to ship and iterate quickly in a continuous delivery model. Why containers are growing in popularity is no surprise — they’re extremely easy to spin up or down, but come with an unforeseen issue. However, without the right foresight, DevOps and IT teams may lo...
DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
