PlexxiPulse—Networking for Cloud Builders

As the industry transitions into the next era of IT, the flood of data and application growth is forcing cloud-based network architectures to change radically. This week, we announced two new products (Plexxi 2.2 Software Suite and Plexxi Switch 3) that combine to provide cloud builders unprecedented capabilities to bring public cloud flexibility and efficiency to the private cloud. The cloud builder generation needs to make the private cloud as easy to consume as the public cloud—and Plexxi’s solutions do just that. These new solutions expand Plexxi’s go-to-market opportunities in content distribution, high frequency trading, enterprise and government market segments. Take a look at this blog post from our CEO that defines cloud builders and outlines how these new products can help cloud builders construct agile, scalable and reliable networks for the Third Era of IT.

SDX Central: New Plexxi Software Targets the ‘Cloud Builders’
By Mike Robuck
Plexxi CEO Rich Napolitano says Tuesday’s announcement of the company’s new Plexxi 2.2 Software Suite for cloud builders and a new switch are major milestones for the company. As a corollary to the software and hardware announcements, Napolitano says that Plexxi has identified its target customers, and that’s even bigger news. “We see a new kind of customer emerging,” he says. “We’ve put a name to them and we call them the ‘cloud architects,’ or the ‘cloud builders.’ Our new set of software capabilities is really aimed at helping these cloud builders build both public and private clouds.”

New Hampshire Union Leader: Paving the Internet: Networking solution by Plexxi Inc. reroutes data traffic
By Michael Cousineau
A computer networking solution developed by Plexxi Inc. reroutes data traffic like you would like to happen when stuck in traffic. “We get to pave new roads on demand,” co-founder and Chief Technology Officer David Husak said at the company headquarters, which occupies space that former computer giant Digital Equipment Corp. called home. The company’s Plexxi Switch 2 captured Product of the Year honors from the New Hampshire High Tech Council on Thursday. “The solutions Plexxi is creating benefit anyone who uses the Internet for business, fun, education or to connect to any of the countless devices we rely on every day,” said Matt Cookson, the council’s executive director.

NetworkComputing: SDN Market To Surpass $1.4 Billion This Year
By Marcia Savage
With SDN deployments growing beyond pilot projects this year, the market for software-defined networking will nearly double from last year, according to a new report from IHS. IHS forecasts the market for “in-use” SDN Ethernet switches and controllers used in the data center and enterprise LAN to top $1.4 billion this year. By 2019, it estimates that the market will top $12 billion. By “in-use,” IHS means SDN-capable switches that are actually used by enterprise customers for SDN, Cliff Grossner, Ph.D., research director data center, cloud and SDN at IHS, told me in an interview. Vendors can ship Ethernet switches as SDN capable by adding a programmable interface, but it doesn’t mean that customers are using them for SDN.

Channelnomics: Making bimodal IT a reality
By Matt Kingswood
A recent survey by Gartner found that 45 per cent of CIOs currently use a bimodal IT service management strategy. This method of service delivery allows IT teams to split their focus into two separate, coherent modes: stability and agility. The first mode involves the operational side of IT, in which the team focuses on the safety and reliability of an organization’s IT environment. This includes daily tasks such as troubleshooting issues and helpdesk functions. The second mode, which is the crux of bimodal IT, is centred on innovation and allows the IT team to experiment and identify new ways of using technology to meet the fast-evolving demands of the business.

SearchServerVirtualization: As the ‘brains’ of SDN, network controllers enable agility
By Keith Townsend
The data center practices of hyperscale providers such as Google, Facebook and Amazon are prompting IT managers to evaluate which powerful scaling technologies they might be able to deploy within their own organizations. One such technology is software-defined networking. SDN allows hyperscale operators to change a network rapidly to meet the requirements of monolithic applications, such as search, and the public-facing cloud. So let’s look at the role SDN and network virtualization can play in the enterprise data center.

Visionary solutions are built by visionary leaders. Plexxi co-founder and Vice President of Product Management Mat Mathews has spent 20 years in the networking industry observing, experimenting and ultimately honing his technology vision. The resulting product — a combination of traditional networking, software-defined networking and photonic switching — represents the best of Mat's career experiences. Prior to Plexxi, Mat held VP of Product Management roles at Arbor Networks and Crossbeam Systems. Mat began his career as a software engineer for Wellfleet Communications, building high speed Frame Relay Switches for the carrier market. Enterprises are adopting Kubernetes to accelerate the development and the delivery of cloud-native applications. However, sharing a Kubernetes cluster between members of the same team can be challenging. And, sharing clusters across multiple teams is even harder. Kubernetes offers several constructs to help implement segmentation and isolation. However, these primitives can be complex to understand and apply. As a result, it’s becoming common for enterprises to end up with several clusters. Thi...
