CollabNet and #YesWeCode Extend Agile Training to Diverse Population

Agile Training

There has been a lot of buzz lately about the growing number of jobs in technology, and simultaneously many stories about the lack of diversity within the profession. There's no doubt the tech field can feel like a bubble at times and I've often wondered if we, as an industry, are leaving an entire talented and creative population untapped when it comes to the booming U.S. Technology Economy.

If it is true that software is eating the world, and developers are in higher demand than ever, it is crucial that we all do our part to embrace inclusiveness of all our community members.

I am very pleased - and proud - to let you know that CollabNet is indeed taking an active role in bringing more diverse talent to the software industry. We just announced an exciting new partnership with #YesWeCode, a Dream Corps initiative designed to bring technology training and industry connections to 100,000 young people in communities of color.

We will start by offering Agile and Scrum software training free of charge to #YesWeCode Coding Corps graduates, beginning this week in San Francisco, CA. Going forward, CollabNet and #YesWeCode will offer Agile software development training through a variety of educational outlets including: developer boot-camps, community and vocation colleges, online degree and training programs, and military career advancement centers.

This move is not entirely selfless, however, I have to point out how tech leaders are benefiting. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has predicted that by 2020 there will be one million more IT jobs than computer science students in the United States. Those of us in the business already know how challenging it can be to recruit top talent, due to the vast number of jobs available, and if these statistics are right, the challenge will only increase. By creating qualified and professional workers through these training opportunities, we are solving our own problem as an industry and serving the community is an added bonus!

From our announcement, here is a great quote from Johnnie Williams, apprenticeship director at #YesWeCode: "Our aim is to support non-traditional candidates in the tech sector with the skills and certifications necessary to excel in the industry. #YesWeCode Coding Corps graduates are already benefiting from the CollabNet partnership by receiving the Agile training and certification. Future initiatives will have a broader impact and allow both organizations to connect high-quality training to diverse communities across the country."

Stay tuned for more progress on the CollabNet and #YesWeCode partnership in the coming months. I can't wait to share the good work our two organizations will perform in the name of advancing the software delivery industry by providing new opportunities. Together we are helping a growing and deserving community of future software developers!

The past few years have brought a sea change in the way applications are architected, developed, and consumed—increasing both the complexity of testing and the business impact of software failures. How can software testing professionals keep pace with modern application delivery, given the trends that impact both architectures (cloud, microservices, and APIs) and processes (DevOps, agile, and continuous delivery)? This is where continuous testing comes in. D
A strange thing is happening along the way to the Internet of Things, namely far too many devices to work with and manage. It has become clear that we'll need much higher efficiency user experiences that can allow us to more easily and scalably work with the thousands of devices that will soon be in each of our lives. Enter the conversational interface revolution, combining bots we can literally talk with, gesture to, and even direct with our thoughts, with embedded artificial intelligence, whic...

In a recent survey, Sumo Logic surveyed 1,500 customers who employ cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). According to the survey, a quarter of the respondents have already deployed Docker containers and nearly as many (23 percent) are employing the AWS Lambda serverless computing framework. It’s clear: serverless is here to stay. The adoption does come with some needed changes, within both application development and operations. Tha...

Digital Transformation (DX) is not a "one-size-fits all" strategy. Each organization needs to develop its own unique, long-term DX plan. In her general session at 21st Cloud Expo, Rebecca Wanta explained how the strategy must focus on DX and include a commitment from top management to create great IT jobs, monitor ...
