DMTF Demonstrates Redfish API Advancements for Storage Management, Unveils Redfish Developer Hub

The Distributed Management Task Force, Inc. (DMTF) today demonstrated for the first time its latest advancements to the Redfish™ standard, which extend the groundbreaking API to help simplify data center storage management. In addition, the organization unveiled the Redfish Developer Hub, a one-stop, in-depth technical resource that provides developers with all the Redfish API files, tools, support and education from around the industry.

Designed to reduce vendor lock-in and increase the productivity of system administrators, DMTF’s Redfish API is an open industry standard specification and schema that helps enable simple, secure and interoperable management of modern scalable platform hardware. By specifying a RESTful interface and utilizing JSON and OData, Redfish helps customers integrate solutions within their existing tool chains. The result of broad industry collaboration, an aggressive development schedule is quickly advancing Redfish toward its goal of addressing manageability of all the components in the data center with a consistent API.

The full Redfish API is being demonstrated in Intel Developer Forum (IDF) booth number 829 including new DMTF Redfish schemas for local storage management, firmware update services, NVDIMM, as well as PCIe switch and device management. DMTF invites public comment on these work-in-progress schemas, which are expected to be released in final format later this quarter.

“The response to the Redfish standard has been incredible, largely because it’s based on the tools and scripting environments most users already have,” said Jeff Hilland, president, DMTF. “DMTF built Redfish from the ground up to scale in today’s enterprise, hyper-scale and cloud infrastructures, and we continue to aggressively expand Redfish into new data center areas, such as storage. We look forward to sharing the latest API updates and our new educational resources with the developer attendees at IDF.”

New Redfish Developer Website

The Redfish Developer Hub offers all of the developer-focused Redfish technical files and resources, interactive mockups, education and community information and more on one comprehensive website.

A Redfish Developer Hub feature is the Redfish Schema Index, which serves as a central repository of Redfish schema files and descriptions from both DMTF and the industry. DMTF welcomes extensions to Redfish and works with its Alliance Partners and OEMs to leverage and expand Redfish.

For example, the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) is developing Swordfish, which builds upon Redfish’s local storage management capabilities to address enterprise storage services.

“Swordfish is being developed as an easy-to-use standard for managing data storage and storage services,” said Don Deel, SNIA storage management initiative governing board chair. “By leveraging DMTF’s existing work on the open Redfish standard, Swordfish will be easier to implement than existing legacy standards and can accomplish a range of storage management tasks while integrating with next-generation technologies.”

Redfish is developed by the DMTF’s Scalable Platforms Management Forum (SPMF), which is led by Broadcom Limited, Cisco, Dell, Inc., EMC Corporation, Emerson Network Power, Ericsson AB, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Inspur, Intel Corporation, Lenovo, Microsoft Corporation, Supermicro and VMware, Inc. with additional support from American Megatrends, Inc., Fujitsu, Huawei, IBM, Insyde Software Corp., Mellanox Technologies, Microsemi Corporation, NetApp, Oracle, OSIsoft LLC., Quanta Computer Inc., Seagate Technology and Western Digital Corporation.

In a recent survey, Sumo Logic surveyed 1,500 customers who employ cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). According to the survey, a quarter of the respondents have already deployed Docker containers and nearly as many (23 percent) are employing the AWS Lambda serverless computing framework. It’s clear: serverless is here to stay. The adoption does come with some needed changes, within both application development and operations. Tha...

The past few years have brought a sea change in the way applications are architected, developed, and consumed—increasing both the complexity of testing and the business impact of software failures. How can software testing professionals keep pace with modern application delivery, given the trends that impact both architectures (cloud, microservices, and APIs) and processes (DevOps, agile, and continuous delivery)? This is where continuous testing comes in. D
