Cloud-Based CMS Market for Higher Education - Market Drivers and Forecast From Technavio

Technavio analysts forecast the global cloud-based content management systems (CMS) market for higher education to grow at an extraordinary CAGR of approximately 30% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global cloud-based CMS market for higher education for 2016-2020. To calculate the market size, the report considers the revenue generated from the sale of education content management software solutions that use cloud platforms to higher educational institutions through cloud-based CMS and cloud-based web content management system (WCMS).

The deployment of cloud platforms for various education-related software solutions, including CMS, has greater penetration in developed economies, such as the US. They are leveraging the fundamental digital platform that has been implemented as a means to promote online learning. These economies are the early adopters of technology, and hence CMS solutions are in demand.

“Emerging regions, such as Africa and Latin America, have been reported to witness a gradual rise in awareness levels. This is evidenced from the active participation of the respective national governments to improve their education systems. Consecutively, the demand for CMS is increasing along with investments,” says Jhansi Mary, one of the lead education technology research analysts at Technavio.

Technavio education analysts highlight the following four factors that are contributing to the growth of the global cloud-based CMS market for higher education:

  • Untapped potential of service providers
  • Reduction in ownership costs
  • Content curation capabilities
  • Increased engagement and productivity

Untapped potential of service providers

Institutions that are availing cloud-based CMS are focused on ground-level services rather than the highly specialized ones. The majority of CMS projects in the higher education segment pertains to issues revolving around implementation and integration with CRM, user interface, mobile application development, and social media. In addition, they are inclined toward procuring specialized services such as designing online pamphlets, brochures, and magazines. Although vendors have adequate expertise in other core competencies, the lack of knowledge among individuals running institutions on such products has led to the unused potential of service providers.

“The decentralized approach of institutions toward implementing CMS is affecting the potential of vendors. CMS deployment for a particular department results in uneven efficiency achieved across an entire institution. In addition, a limited outlook on and exposure of an institution limits the holistic view for vendors to design an effective solution,” says Jhansi.

Reduction in ownership costs

Educational institutions no longer need to invest in maintenance and support services of infrastructure that is required to provide quality education. Cloud-based content management simplifies infrastructure issues related to the creation and management of content either internally or on web, allowing educational institutions to focus on the teaching process. In this model, the maintenance and operation cost, infrastructure cost, updates, and associated risks are handled by third-party service providers rather than end-users.

The traditional method of maintaining hardware and software is a time-consuming process. This is because the creation of connectors for all different systems in the IT infrastructure of an institution and partner systems to achieve an integrated flow of information is difficult. This problem can be resolved by adopting a cloud computing model that offers a wide variety of connectors for systems by leading software vendors.

Content curation capabilities

Users have consistently found it challenging to merge different types of content within one platform. As a result, in most cases, there is a lack of relevant data available and the learning process is incomplete. This deviates learners from their learning goals. Learning content management solution (LCMS) and other content authoring tools are also used to manage and track relevant courses instead of content. Learners are seeking options for easy accessibility to updated and large sources of content to support their learning needs.

Learning methods and goals are continuously changing owing to the shift in assessments and learner requirements. The current traditional system can inhibit content creation and access due to technical and platform incompatibility issues. Other than this, these systems have limited storage space, which hamper teachers' productivity. Teachers cannot access various content simultaneously while designing their own lesson plans. With the deployment of cloud-based services, these issues can be resolved.

Increased engagement and productivity

Institutions are increasingly promoting the use of mobile devices among their faculty, administrative staff, students, and other educational industry stakeholders. This can be observed from the rise in acceptance of the bring your own device (BYOD) policy. The accessibility to educational content and related services, such as assignment submission, is facilitated through mobile devices, such as laptops and iPads. Therefore, institutions need to manage their mobile device ecosystem.
