Syncsort's Big Iron to Big Data Powerhouse Ironstream® Now Delivers Advanced Visibility into Mainframe Data with Splunk IT Service Intelligence

Real-Time Mainframe Data in Splunk ITSI Provides Enterprise-Wide View of the Health and Performance of Critical Business Services

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., Oct. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Syncsort, a global leader in Big Iron to Big Data solutions, today announced new capabilities in its innovative Ironstream® software that allows organizations to access and integrate mainframe log data in real-time to Splunk® IT Service Intelligence (Splunk ITSI). The integration of Ironstream with Splunk ITSI provides users with new levels of visibility into the health and performance indicators of mainframe and mainframe-to-distributed IT services.

Splunk ITSI, a machine learning powered monitoring solution, enables organizations to monitor and visualize their most critical business services and processes with state-of-the-art dashboards and interactive visualizations. Administrators can get real-time health check and insights into critical performance indicators to help deliver better response time and more reliable services to their customers. The new Syncsort Ironstream Module for Splunk ITSI delivers information about large-scale mainframe business processes and services that play a core role in many organization's key customer transactions.

"Our customers have told us they need the same advanced performance capabilities for their mainframe that they get for their distributed systems," said Rick Fitz, senior vice president of IT markets, Splunk. "The new Syncsort Ironstream Module for Splunk ITSI enables customers to send valuable mainframe machine data in real time to Splunk solutions, without requiring administrators to manually navigate back and forth between systems to troubleshoot problems and derive actionable intelligence."

Leveraging the data Ironstream delivers, Splunk ITSI gives customers a "Glass Table" view to monitor key activities that affect availability and response times for application services from across the enterprise, including IBM z Systems.

"Many of the world's leading telco, retail, insurance, healthcare, and financial organizations rely on mainframes for critical applications and need advanced Big Data analytics to monitor them and resolve service issues. One common use case is administrators at banks who want to get a heads-up on slow-downs when customers are trying to login from mobile phones," said David Hodgson, General Manager of Syncsort's Mainframe business. "The big iron data that Ironstream feeds to Splunk ITSI for advanced analytics gives administrators the information they require to see the entire transaction path and help them better understand and resolve those kinds of critical performance issues."

"No big data solution is complete without access to mainframe data," said Peter Burris, Chief Research Officer, Wikibon. "But for technical and institutional reasons, access to mainframe data requires mainframe-type access controls. Delivering this is something that requires years of experience. Few companies have that experience. Syncsort is one of them, and their Big Iron to Big Data program shows them at their best."

Consistent with its Big Iron to Big Data strategy, Syncsort's roadmap for Ironstream includes a consistent delivery of enhancements, modules, and Splunkbase apps to handle emerging use cases, continuing to work to make the right data from evolving data sources readily available in real time to Splunk Enterprise, Splunk Enterprise Security, and now Splunk ITSI.

Prior to the new capabilities announced today, Syncsort delivered the ability to filter SMF data generated on z/OS systems (to control how much of the large quantities of SMF data generated on z/OS systems are sent to Splunk for analysis), developed new ways to push additional mainframe data sources to Splunk solutions, and added IBM z/OS network and security data and alerts to the stream to provide deeper insights into security issues.

Syncsort allows organizations to trial its free Ironstream Starter Edition for moving z/OS Syslog data into Splunk Enterprise. Unlike a typical technology trial, Syncsort allows organizations to use the Starter Edition to move the data without a time limit and to run the application in production at no charge.

DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
