Mylestoned Releases the Inaugural "DeathScape"

The DeathScape is the first ever publicly available, comprehensive overview of the $26B+ Death Care industry

BOSTON, Oct. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Mylestoned, a provider of mobile services that helps people remember and celebrate deceased loved ones, today released The DeathScape, the first-ever comprehensive overview of the Death Care industry.  You can find a copy of the deathscape at https://mylestoned.com/deathscape

The DeathScape highlights the major corporations that lead the industry, like Service Corp International, Carriage and Hillenbrand, technology providers such as Consolidated Funeral Services and Tukios, consumer platforms such as Legacy.com and Everplans and suppliers such as Dodge and Messenger.  For those unfamiliar with the industry, it provides a view into how the Death Care industry works, from end-of-life services, such as hospice and palliative services, to at-need funeral and cremation services, and aftercare, which focuses on grief support and memorialization.

"The Death Care industry is a $26B+ behemoth, that often flies below the radar.  It's massive, and provides an invaluable service to every single human on the planet - and it's transforming with the rise of social media and change in secular views about death," Mylestoned CEO, Dave Balter, said. "To that end, we thought it would be useful to provide a glimpse into the organizations that define the industry."

Releasing the DeathScape now is critically important, given the industry is in a once-in-a-generation state of transformation.  Cremation has surpassed burial as the primary way we lay our loved ones to rest, leading to margin erosion for many independent funeral homes.  Funeral homes themselves are declining, with 10% less in 2015 than 2005, according to the National Funeral Directors Association.  The rise of social media channels for communicating about the deceased has perhaps had the largest impact, as the way individuals grieve and memorialize now extends beyond the limited event that is a traditional American funeral.

"It's likely that over the next decade we will see massive change in the Death Care industry," said Brett Logan, Head of Growth at Mylestoned, "Acquisitions and consolidation will continue to accelerate— and the public companies will need to diversify their services to stay relevant. It's important to understand the scope of the industry in order to get ahead of these changes."

The DeathScape is organized into service buckets, chronological from left to right (in the order consumers would experience the service). Technology runs across to bottom as it is generally applicable to all phases of Death Care. The end product, including market size estimates for some of the service buckets, was comprised through analysis of information published by the numerous publicly traded companies in the space, as well as aggregation of publicly available research and industry resources.

DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
