Illumio Introduces Security Templates to Shut Down Existing Security Gaps Inside Data Centers and Clouds

Ready-to-deploy policies provide instant security for Windows and Linux applications and services

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Illumio, the Adaptive Security Company, today introduced Illumio Security Templates, delivering ready-to-deploy security policies for core data center and cloud applications. Illumio Security Templates are pre-built to secure common applications—they provide segmentation without having to reconfigure the network in any way. Illumio Security Templates can be rapidly deployed to secure applications including Microsoft Active Directory, Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft SQL Server and MongoDB in minutes.

Illumio Security Templates are downloadable, tested and validated policy packs that provide all the segmentation rules needed to write a security policy for common enterprise applications or application components.

Many applications—whether they are deployed in existing data centers or cloud computing environments such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services or Google Compute Engine—require IT to repeatedly write policies from scratch for every application and its components by plumbing the allowed IP addresses and port/process connections for each service. This approach is both time-consuming and error-ridden, creating delays and security gaps that frequently add days or weeks to the deployment process.

"Illumio's Security Templates let security and operations teams be as agile as they need to be," said Matthew Glenn, Vice President of Product Management at Illumio. "With 'push-button' policies, IT no longer needs to laboriously create manual (and error-prone) segmentation rules in switches and firewalls from scratch. Our security templates take the work out of categorizing applications, or modifying the network to secure these critical applications. Applying pre-tested rule sets rapidly and accurately enables truly adaptive segmentation approaches for applications."

The value of the new template approach is especially pronounced in Windows Server environments, where the lack of process awareness in firewalls and network-based security technologies limits the ability of these solutions to properly segment and secure applications. In addition, it frequently takes time to understand how these applications function before writing firewalls rules.

To achieve the same level of security provided by Illumio Security Templates with a network solution requires opening a wide range of ports on the servers, effectively increasing the attack surface of the environment. The Illumio Adaptive Security Platform (ASP)™ uses the specific process and path used by the server—rather than dynamic ports—and applies the exact set of fine-grained segmentation rules required for protection.

In addition, Illumio Security Templates take the guesswork out of security, since they have been tested to ensure that they do not break applications. Security templates allow organizations to extend their Active Directory domains up to public cloud without having to compromise on security.

The new Illumio Security Template program enables Illumio ASP to tightly wrap a segmentation policy around an application, which can then be deployed or migrated in minutes across a range of critical servers and applications. Below is a representative list of templates included in the Illumio Security Template program.

Detecting internal user threats in the Big Data eco-system is challenging and cumbersome. Many organizations monitor internal usage of the Big Data eco-system using a set of alerts. This is not a scalable process given the increase in the number of alerts with the accelerating growth in data volume and user base. Organizations are increasingly leveraging machine learning to monitor only those data elements that are sensitive and critical, autonomously establish monitoring policies, and to detect...

DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete. However, applying the culture to outdated technology is a recipe for disaster; as response times grow and connections between teams are delayed by technology, the culture will die. A Nutanix Enterprise Cloud has many benefits that provide the needed base for a true DevOps paradigm.
Most DevOps journeys involve several phases of maturity. Research shows that the inflection point where organizations begin to see maximum value is when they implement tight integration deploying their code to their infrastructure. Success at this level is the last barrier to at-will deployment. Storage, for instance, is more capable than where we read and write data. In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 20th Cloud Expo, Josh Atwell, a Developer Advocate for NetApp, will discuss the role and valu...

Automation is enabling enterprises to design, deploy, and manage more complex, hybrid cloud environments. Yet the people who manage these environments must be trained in and understanding these environments better than ever before. A new era of analytics and cognitive computing is adding intelligence, but also more complexity, to these cloud environments. How smart is your cloud? How smart should it be?
