v6.1 Gives Users Dual-Mode Control Over Releases

A new year and more new innovations from XebiaLabs! This week we bring you a shiny new XL Release and XL Deploy—version 6.1. Also on the menu are plugin updates: our Jenkins plugins now allow even better integration with Jenkins 2.0, and we’ve added support for new versions of popular middleware.

New Code-Centric Features

Our flagship functionality for 6.1 is a group of “code-centric” features that work side by side with our powerful graphical UI to add dual-mode control for release orchestration and deployment. New code-centric release definitions allow developers to define releases using a Groovy DSL, a simple and familiar format. New code-centric releases and code-centric deployments enable control of XL Release and XL Deploy from within the Jenkins 2.0 ‘pipeline-as-code’ structure. We’ll talk more about the benefits of code-centric features in a couple of days, so stay tuned.

New code-centric features in XL Release 6.1 let teams define releases entirely with code in addition to using the familiar visual user interface. http://i1.wp.com/blog.xebialabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/XLR-Xfile... 300w" sizes="(max-width: 743px) 100vw, 743px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

XL Release Enhancements

But it’s not just about new code-centric capabilities. The 6.1 release brings a whole host of new features for our top-ranked Application Release Automation (ARA) platform. (Download these free Gartner and Forrester reports to learn more about ARA.) Here are the latest enhancements to XL Release, designed to help teams work more efficiently and with better visibility:

  • New Groovy-based DSL, the Xfile – With our new DSL, you can define releases as code in XL Release.
  • Jenkinsfile support for XL Release – Now you can initiate releases in XL Release directly from a Jenkinsfile.
  • Big performance gains – Features include more efficient loading of releases so you get faster overviews, more efficient retrieval of gate dependencies to yield faster response, more efficient memory usage that puts less memory strain on the server, and optimized default server parameters for better tuned performance out of the box.
  • Better support for custom tasks – Enhancements include a new real-time status display line to yield better visibility into custom task status, more efficient and more robust support for long-running tasks, and richer custom task UIs that allow more flexible task behavior.
  • Task support for Groovy and for downloaded files – Now you can script tasks in Groovy in addition to Python. You can also download a Groovy or Python file from an external location and run it as a script inside an XL Release task.
  • Improved Task Progress dashboard – The Task Progress Dashboard is now a pre-installed tile. We’ve also added tag-based filtering for more granular display of visual reports.http://i2.wp.com/blog.xebialabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/XLR-Task-... 300w" sizes="(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px" data-recalc-dims="1" />
  • A new Support Accelerator – This new feature automatically generates a zip file of configuration and logs that you can send to XebiaLabs Support to facilitate faster issue resolution.
  • And more – Including support for multiple LDAP servers and the ability to test connections for remote servers using a Test button in the XL Release UI.

XL Deploy Enhancements

XL Deploy also continues its trajectory as the most advanced deployment automation tool available anywhere:

  • Jenkinsfile support for XL Deploy – You can now create a package, upload a package and deploy a package from a Jenkinsfile.
  • More features in the HTML5 Tech Preview – Try out more new deployment functions in the new UI, create and export HTML-based deployment reports for any date range and use an HTML-based interface to set up roles and assign global permissions.
  • Enhanced support for popular middleware – Enjoy updated plugins for WebSphere Application Server 9.0, WebSphere Liberty Profile 16.0 and JBoss EAP (Enterprise Application Platform) 7.0.
  • Improved support for other popular tools – Get the latest support for AWS (Amazon Web Services) EC2 and Puppet.
