OAG Announces New On-time Performance Star Ratings for Airlines and Airports

OAG, the air travel intelligence company, has released the industry’s first On-time Performance (OTP) Star Ratings, setting the standard for the world’s best airlines and airports in OTP. The newly released data highlights exceptional OTP from Delta Air Lines, the only legacy carrier to meet the criteria for earning 3 stars, and continued excellent performance from Hawaiian Airlines, the only North American airline to earn 4 stars.

This new biannual rating system is a global accreditation program that recognizes exceptional OTP across all airports and airlines regardless of size, geographic location or aviation peer group. The awards showcase only the best performers – just 11 airports and three airlines globally earned a 5-star rating, which requires an OTP of at least 90 percent.

Delta’s performance is particularly noteworthy, as a 3-star rating for a legacy carrier is difficult to achieve. In a U.S. air travel ecosystem that relies on major hubs, it’s easy for a single delay or cancellation to knock an entire day of flights off schedule. Despite managing one of the largest fleets in the world, Delta has remained a cut above its competitors. American and United both finished solidly, earning 1-star ratings with an OTP of 78.7 and 78.6 percent, respectively.

Some of North America’s largest airport hubs managed to earn 3 stars with very good OTP despite operating some of the most heavily used airports in the world. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (84.5 percent), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (83.1 percent) and Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport (84.3 percent) all performed strongly for airports of their size. Hilo International Airport was the only US airport to achieve 5-star on-time performance, while Lihue Airport came out with an 89.4 percent OTP and was the only North American airport to earn a 4-star rating.

“As the world’s skies and airports become more crowded and congested, punctuality has become one of the criteria by which the outstanding are set apart from the ordinary,” said John Grant, Senior Analyst, OAG. “Today’s travelers use OTP as a key performance indicator to judge the quality of an airline or airport, making it critical for travel providers to continually look for new ways to optimize and improve their punctuality.”

While OAG’s Punctuality League celebrates annual performance against airline and airport peers, the OTP star rating is designed to benchmark against set criteria, defined by industry and flight status information experts. OTP is measured across the whole year – and awarded twice a year in April and October – through a definitive benchmark, using set criteria as defined by OAG, the flight status experts.

STARS       Airports & Airlines
5*       90 – 100% of flights on time
4*       87.5 – 89.9% of flights on time
3*       83 – 87.4% of flights on time
2*       80 – 82.9% of flights on time
1*       75 – 79.9% of flights on time

To achieve an OTP star rating, the world’s airlines and airports must meet two simple criteria: all airlines and airports must have a minimum of 600 operations a month and OAG must receive flight status information for no less than 80 percent of scheduled flights within a 12-month period.

Any startup has to have a clear go –to-market strategy from the beginning. Similarly, any data science project has to have a go to production strategy from its first days, so it could go beyond proof-of-concept. Machine learning and artificial intelligence in production would result in hundreds of training pipelines and machine learning models that are continuously revised by teams of data scientists and seamlessly connected with web applications for tenants and users.

IoT is at the core or many Digital Transformation initiatives with the goal of re-inventing a company's business model. We all agree that collecting relevant IoT data will result in massive amounts of data needing to be stored. However, with the rapid development of IoT devices and ongoing business model transformation, we are not able to predict the volume and growth of IoT data. And with the lack of IoT history, traditional methods of IT and infrastructure planning based on the past do not app...
