Première mondiale, une journée de questions-réponses jette la lumière sur le fardeau croissant du cancer du rein

Le cancer du rein est une maladie silencieuse qui gagne du terrain. Il est estimé que l'incidence mondiale de cette maladie augmentera, de manière alarmante, de 22 pour cent d'ici 2020. Les explications restent incomplètes, mais elles incluent des facteurs de risque tel que le vieillissement, l'obésité, une tension artérielle élevée et le tabagisme.

Le manque de réponses à ce sujet est la raison qui a poussé l'International Kidney Cancer Coalition (IKCC) et des organisations du cancer du rein du monde entier à organiser la toute première Journée mondiale des questions-réponses sur le cancer du rein. Le 22 juin prochain, des patients, des soignants, des professionnels de la santé et des organisations locales se regrouperont pour poser des questions et chercher de réponses:

  • Comment expliquer les variations d'incidence du cancer rénal dans le monde? Des taux élevés d'incidence sont constatés en Europe du Nord et de l'Est, en Amérique du Nord et en Australie, avec les taux les plus élevés en République tchèque.
  • Comment lutter contre l'écart croissant du taux de mortalité du cancer rénal entre les économies émergentes et les économies développées?
  • Comment prévenir le cancer du rein, ou le détecter plus tôt quand les patients peuvent encore être soignés?

"Nous avons besoin d'une collaboration mondiale contre le cancer du rein, en matière de recherche, de sensibilisation et de conseil, car en travaillant ensemble notre impact est plus grand et nous pouvons apporter des changements significatifs pour les patients", déclare le Dr Rachel Giles, présidente de l'IKCC.

Un nouveau document rédigé par des spécialistes de renom, The Global Burden of Kidney Cancer: A Call to Action (en cours de révision) souligne les défis liés au diagnostic et à la gestion de la maladie.

L'IKCC a également lancé un quiz intitulé World Kidney Cancer Day Q&A Quiz. Disponible en neuf langues, ce questionnaire en sept points teste vos connaissances, et ce que vous devez savoir, sur le cancer du rein. Pour chaque questionnaire rempli, 5 dollars seront versés à un projet de recherche de haute priorité en faveur des patients du monde entier.

Se faire entendre pour une grande cause
Célébrité internationale et personnalité humanitaire, Juliet Ibrahim est l'ambassadrice mondiale de la campagne.

"Tout comme l'art, le cancer du rein ne connaît pas de limite. En travaillant ensemble, en partageant nos expériences et nos connaissances, nous pouvons faire avancer les choses pour les personnes atteintes de cancer rénal", déclare Juliet. La Fondation Juliet Ibrahim donne de l'espoir aux patients dans toute l'Afrique.

La Journée mondiale des questions-réponses sur le cancer du rein a été créée par l'IKCC (www.ikcc.org), une entité mondiale de 30 organisations de lutte contre le cancer s'attelant à améliorer la vie des personnes touchées par le cancer du rein. La campagne est soutenue par Bristol-Myers Squibb, Novartis, Pfizer et Ipsen.
