Amazon Makes Foray Into Edge Computing With AWS Greengrass

In October 2015, when I got a chance to review AWS IoT right after its launch, I had an ask – an appliance that acts as the local gateway to the devices, tackling primary routing and message processing.

Today, at an event in San Francisco, Amazon announced the general availability of AWS Greengrass, the software that powers local edge gateways and appliances. It is exactly what I wished to see as an extension to AWS IoT.

This new addition to the AWS IoT portfolio has the potential to become the cornerstone of Amazon’s hybrid and edge strategy. It is one of the very few products from Amazon that can run on-premises.

AWS Greengrass was announced by Andy Jassy at the last re:Invent event in December 2016. Since then the product has been in the limited preview which was available only to select customers and partners. Many prominent logos including Intel, Qualcomm, Technicolor, Samsung, Acer, Nokia and QNAP are featured as the launch customers and partners. Amazon is working closely with system integrators, independent software vendors, electronics, hardware and silicon manufacturers to drive the adoption of Greengrass.

AWS Greengrass has a small footprint that can run on system-on-a-chip devices like Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone powered by ARM processors. It can also run in full-blown x86 servers in large data center environments. The compute layer of Greengrass is delivered through AWS Lambda, the first serverless computing platform introduced a few years ago.

The platform exposes MQTT endpoint for local machine-to-machine communication. Like its counterpart in the public cloud, Greengrass IoT supports device shadows, which act as digital twins representing the metadata and state information of connected devices. The device shadow can also double up as the local storage engine that stores additional information about the connected devices. Developers can write Lambda functions that are triggered by message routing or data ingestion. This capability enables Greengrass to filter data that only needs to be ingested into the public cloud for further analysis.
