Stora Enso Modernizes Data Management at the Edge with Rubrik

PALO ALTO, Calif. and AMSTERDAM, Oct. 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Rubrik, the Cloud Data Management Company, announced today that Stora Enso has deployed Rubrik's market-leading data management platform at their paper mill in Langerbrugge, Ghent to protect their virtual and physical workloads. Stora Enso, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, is a leading provider of renewable solutions in packaging, biomaterials, wooden constructions, and paper on global markets. The Langerbrugge mill produces 540,000 tons of recycled newsprint and magazine paper annually. As a forerunner in sustainability, the mill also operates two biomass-fueled CHP's (Combined Heat and Power plants) that produce more than 70% of the electricity required by the mill.

The deployment includes Rubrik Edge, a software-only appliance, to protect the mill's seven remote office environments across the UK, France, and Belgium. With Rubrik, Stora Enso Langerbrugge delivers automated backup, instant recovery, search, and platform analytics across all environments.

Prior to Rubrik, the company struggled with poor backup performance, complex management, and lengthy restores. In Rubrik, Stora Enso Langerbrugge found a centralized, policy-driven solution for its entire environment. Since the deployment, the company has achieved the following benefits:

  • 6x improvement in backup performance
  • Instant recovery
  • Significantly reduced RPO (1 week vs 1 day)
  • Accelerated test/dev for physical SQL

"Stora Enso Langerbrugge supports three production units and five sales offices. It is imperative that we have visibility into all our data and speed of recovery to ensure our operational continuity across all our environments," said Benny T'Jaeckx, IT System Engineer, Stora Enso. "Rubrik Edge eliminates complex data management across multiple sites, delivering scalable growth and one-click restores at remote sites."

"Our previous solution was prone to backup failures and irregular notifications. Rubrik offers proactive monitoring and compliance reporting, saving my team headaches and time. Additionally, we're planning on moving to public cloud, and we know that Rubrik can help us easily get there."

"We are excited to partner with Stora Enso, a leading paper manufacturer that serves customers worldwide," said Bipul Sinha, co-founder and CEO, Rubrik. "By deploying our Cloud Data Management platform, the company is leveraging a single software fabric to bring management simplicity to all its workloads, no matter where the data resides."

When it comes to cloud computing, the ability to turn massive amounts of compute cores on and off on demand sounds attractive to IT staff, who need to manage peaks and valleys in user activity. With cloud bursting, the majority of the data can stay on premises while tapping into compute from public cloud providers, reducing risk and minimizing need to move large files. Is advanced scheduling in Kubernetes achievable? Yes, however, how do you properly accommodate every real-life scenario that a Kubernetes user might encounter? How do you leverage advanced scheduling techniques to shape and describe each scenario in easy-to-use rules and configurations? Companies are harnessing data in ways we once associated with science fiction. Analysts have access to a plethora of visualization and reporting tools, but considering the vast amount of data businesses collect and limitations of CPUs, end users are forced to design their structures and systems with limitations. Until now. As the cloud toolkit to analyze data has evolved, GPUs have stepped in to massively parallel SQL, visualization and machine learning.
DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
The session is centered around the tracing of systems on cloud using technologies like ebpf. The goal is to talk about what this technology is all about and what purpose it serves. In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Shashank Jain, Development Architect at SAP, will touch upon concepts of observability in the cloud and also some of the challenges we have. Generally most cloud-based monitoring tools capture details at a very granular level. To troubleshoot problems this might not be good enough.
