Carnegie Learning Partners with OpenStax to Offer the Most Powerful and Affordable College Math Solution on the Market

Carnegie Learning, Inc., a research-proven leader of mathematics technology, curriculum and services, has announced a partnership with OpenStax, a leading provider of open educational resources and textbooks that are free online for any student, anywhere. The partnership will combine Mika, the most powerful math courseware available in higher education, with OpenStax textbooks into a single, affordable learning solution for developmental math.

Mika is the culmination of 20+ years of research in cognitive science, instructional design and artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional homework software, Mika was built from the ground up to deliver a smarter, more nimble experience that is research-proven to work. An independent study by the RAND Corporation, including over 18,000 students at 147 schools in seven states, demonstrated that the technology leveraged in Mika can lead to substantial increases in student learning outcomes.1

OpenStax, a nonprofit based at Rice University, aims to improve access to education by offering low-cost open-source college textbooks. OpenStax textbooks are written by experts in their fields, meet standard scope and sequence requirements, and undergo a rigorous peer review process. OpenStax estimates having saved students more than $340 million since 2012.

“We’re here to change the status quo in math education,” said Barry Malkin, CEO of Carnegie Learning. “This partnership offers the best of two worlds for a fraction of the cost. Every year, roughly $7 billion is spent on remedial education in the U.S., but the average success rate for remedial math courses is only 33%. We have to do better for our students at a price point they can afford.”

“OpenStax is proud to give the faculty and students using our developmental math titles another cutting-edge technology option,” said David Harris, Editor in Chief at OpenStax. “Increasing student learning outcomes is one of our central goals, and we know that Carnegie Learning will be a valuable addition to our growing ecosystem of resources.”

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
