The rules for effective SEO change periodically and you not only need to be adaptable to that change, but also actively looking for it so that you can position your business properly to gain the maximum advantage whether it is in organic SEO techniques or local SEO. 1.       Find local sponsorship opportunities. The use of sponsorships is a very valid and effective method of link building on the local level. While this same technique is not very effective from an organic standpoint, at the local level they can be pure gold for two reasons. First and foremost it is because you become a stronger part of your local community when you are sponsoring local events. Your business and your employees are helping make a local difference and impact by supporting local youth sports teams, school booster clubs, larger fundraising events like charity races, chamber of commerce backed events and the like. While every city is different, most have a plethora of sponsorship opportunities. Often underrated, becoming a larger contributor locally can greatly help spread awareness of your business and help you create stronger local network. The second reason to use this technique is for the actual links you earn along with increasing the local relevancy of your business with Google.

2.       Use local business listings. By local business listings we mean taking advantage of the local resources most towns have available, not finding low-end online directories that will do more harm than good. The local Chamber of Commerce should always be the first stop as a good chamber not only provides local representation but often has a bevy of resources to make use of. The Better Business Bureau is another common and useful directory to join. You can also look for local networking groups and professional affiliation groups in your area as they both can provide reputable links to increase your local profile.

3.       Join a service group. Most communities have a number of service groups that help support the community such as Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis, the Lions Club, etc. While some might feel that these groups are outdated, many are finally getting more serious about their online footprint which can mean a good opportunity to get your name and a business profile linked up. Additionally these groups can lead to wonderful networking opportunities, local partnerships and unique sponsorship chances which are all great for local exposure.

4.       Find location specific sites near you. If you live in or near a desirable destination chances are there will be location specific sites that can be utilized to help increase your local footprint. For example, if your business is located in Napa, California you are in the middle of "California Wine Country" which means there should be a bevy of local sites that focus on the wine and hospitality industries. While these sites might not be overly powerful when it comes to considering a link, what they do have in spades is local relevancy which is one thing you need to be building when you focus on local SEO.

5.       Obtain local citations. A citation is any mention of your business' name, address, and phone number in print (either actual print or digital). We have already covered local business listings for citations, but most communities have other outlets for citations such as the local newspaper, government websites, event listings, job databases, or local blogs. One popular citation method is to pay a small fee to your community paper to write a blog focused on your business expertise. For example, a local mortgage broker might write a weekly or monthly blog providing tips or answering common questions.
