Is Your App Performance Helping or Hindering the Bottom Line?

You’d be hard-pressed to find an IT leader who can say that they haven’t lost at least a night or two of sleep worrying about application performance. But in the modern enterprise, application performance issues are more than just an IT headache; they can easily devastate a company’s reputation—and bottom line—if allowed to spiral out of control.

A mere 1-second delay in page load time results in 11 percent fewer page views, a 16 percent decrease in customer satisfaction, and a 7 percent loss in conversions. And research by Aberdeen reveals that application performance issues can actually impact a company’s revenue by up to 9 percent. With such a high direct influence on overall company performance, forward-thinking IT leaders are increasingly looking to application performance management (APM) as a way to maximize IT’s business impact.

Here is a small preview of the 7-step process for getting started with AppDynamics APM we cover in the eBook:

1. Create an APM Strategy
To get the most out of AppDynamics APM, it’s important to begin with a solid APM strategy document. Since application performance affects many people—both inside and outside your organization—there are inevitably going to be some conflicting priorities, which is why an APM strategy is essential.

Aside from outlining a clear vision and goals for application performance, a comprehensive APM strategy document will help align developers and operations engineers on priorities when it comes to monitoring, dashboard visualizations, and alerting.

2. Create an Internal APM Wiki
You should also create an internal APM wiki (and dedicated wiki content) for your APM deployment. This will function as the central communications hub for all stakeholders and enable sharing of best practices as they evolve.

The eBook offers a number of suggestions for types of wiki content that have proven useful for other development teams, but a few include proposed configurations, success stories for solving common development issues, and playbooks for critical errors.

3. Separate Signal From Noise
AppDynamics APM will track and visualize a vast number of data points to help resolve issues and tune performance. However, it’s important to decipher which data is “signal”—that is, critical application traffic—and which is just “noise.”

Prior to your APM implementation, it’s imperative to create a list of critical Business Transactions that need to be monitored—and validate that list internally with key stakeholders.

4. Define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
As you deploy AppDynamics APM, you’ll have to choose from among hundreds of thousands—if not millions—of data points to be measured. Don’t get sucked into the “more is better” mentality. Usually, the three most important measures for maintaining excellence throughout the Business Transactions are load, response time, and error rate.

5. Establish Health Rules
In APM, your application is healthy when it performs at or above normal behavior as identified in the baseline measurements. By determining and setting up health rules, you can configure AppDynamics APM to trigger an action that you have defined (like sending out an email alert of running a script) whenever conditions move outside the established KPI baseline.

6. Create Dashboard Visualizations
With your essential health rules in place, AppDynamics can help you make sense of them all with appropriate dashboard visualizations. These dashboards are easily one of the most important aspects of a successful APM integration, so it pays to understand who the stakeholders are that should be leveraging dashboards and, most importantly, what metrics they care about.

7. Automate Everything
In the 21st century, automation is no longer a luxury. You should explore how you can use AppDynamics APM to set up workflows to automate commonly repeated tasks, such as scripts and configuration changes. It’s also worth considering how automation in areas such as agent deployment and configuration deployment can help you drive further efficiencies.

When an organization’s key applications grind to a halt, the consequences can be disastrous. By taking a strategic approach to APM, you can catch small performance issues before they become big problems—and elevate the role of IT in your organization from service provider to strategic business leader.
