Databases in the Era of Next-Gen Computing

Serverless Databases: AWS Aurora Serverless, FaunaDB & CosmosDB

In the span of my career in IT of 15 years, I’ve been involved with database management and I know how difficult it gets sometimes. Most of the DBAs I know faces problems mainly with scalability and management.

We all have many options when it comes to scaling. Whether we opt for vertical or horizontal scaling, managing either of them is not as easy as it sounds. Hardware changes and downtime is high if you choose vertical scaling, while horizontal scaling has multiple single points of failure.

What if you are going serverless technology? Are these problems still relevant? Not anymore!

We all are familiar with how serverless architecture is changing the way we develop an application. On the top of that, another good news is that you won’t be required to manage and scale your database manually. Because Serverless Databases are here.

What is AWS Aurora Serverless?

At the latest AWS re:Invent 2017, AWS discussed the prevailing problems with the traditional databases and unveiled Aurora Serverless. It is a database which is equivalent to an event-driven serverless approach. It is a database service which will make management of relational databases easy.

It is going to be a lot cheaper since the data is not required to transfer continuously. It will start-up, shut down and scale up & down as per the requirement of the application. With Aurora Serverless, you don’t need to worry about the management of database instance and clusters.

The major change in serverless databases in comparison to the traditional one is that data processing and data storage will be billed separately. This means you will have to pay only for the time when the data will be processed and not when it is at rest. However, data storage will be obviously charged but it will be relatively cheaper.

This is a perfect solution for apps which have intermittent, infrequent or unpredictable workloads.

In the background, your endpoint works as a proxy that routes your queries to a set of resources, where a warm pool of computing resources can scale within seconds. These resources, when separated this way, facilitates the intact connection along with scaling.

What is FaunaDB?

FaunaDB says that you should not manage your databases if you're not managing your servers! Hence, it is the perfect fit for the serverless applications. Some of the exceptional features of FaunaDB are no requirement of provisioning, pay only for what you use and built-in security. Al these features makes this an ideal option as a Serverless Database.

What is CosmosDB?

CosmosDB is a multi-model database offered by Microsoft Azure. Some of the prominent features of CosmosDB are global distribution and high scalability. It facilitates turnkey global distribution across multiple regions offered by Azure, by transparently replicating and scaling your data as per the user location. It also offers single-digit-milliseconds latencies at the 99th percentile anywhere in the world.

Here are some of the major advantages Serverless Databases will be bringing for us.

  • Easy to scale
  • Pay-per-use
  • HTTP accessibility
  • Authentication and authorization based on IAM roles

It will be exciting to see what serverless databases brings on the table.

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
