Northern Mutual Insurance Company to Implement Insuresoft's .Net Diamond System

Insuresoft, a leading provider of insurance software, announced today that Michigan based Northern Mutual Insurance Company will implement Insuresoft’s newest release of the Diamond System™ as its policy processing system.

The Diamond System™ is a fully automated and integrated policy processing system for both personal and commercial insurance carriers. It is a scalable, reliable, and cost-effective solution for carrying out all business-critical insurance processing functions. There are nearly 400 Diamond modules in production for both personal and commercial lines of insurance across North America.

Northern Mutual Insurance Company can trace its origins back to Erick Kakela, a farmer residing near Calumet, Michigan, who conceived of the idea of forming a fire insurance company in 1889 to provide an alternative to the large stock insurance companies of the time. By 1890, the company was officially formed.

Because of the Finnish heritage of the original founders, the name of the new company was the Finnish name “Suomalaisten Keskinainen Palovakuutus – Yhtio” or as translated to English, “Finnish Mutual Fire Insurance Company”. The founders created their new venture as a mutual insurance company, or a company that is owned by the policyholders. To this day the company remains a mutual company, although since January, 1990, has operated under the name of Northern Mutual Insurance Company, with the home office now being located south of Calumet in Hancock, Michigan.

Today, Northern Mutual is rated “A-, Excellent” by A.M. Best Company which rates all insurance companies on their ability to meet their primary obligation of paying claims. The company provides Homeowners, Personal Auto, Fire, and Businessowners insurance throughout the state of Michigan by way of the Independent Insurance Agency system.
