Lexmark names Volunteer of the Year, donates $5,000 to local nonprofit organization

LEXINGTON, Ky., April 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lexmark International, Inc. today announced the recipient of its Volunteer of the Year Award, which annually recognizes a Lexmark employee for commitment to outstanding volunteer service.

Jessica Mayes, materials engineer, has been awarded Lexmark's 2007 Volunteer of the Year Award.

Mayes received the award based on her extensive volunteer work for numerous nonprofit organizations in the Bluegrass community. She was specifically nominated for her work with the Paris Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). Mayes is a board member and spends many hours each week participating in adoption activities and finding homes for animals, including fostering pets until they are adopted. Additionally, Mayes was instrumental in organizing the annual golf scramble, dinner and silent auction, which together raised more than $18,000 for the organization.

As part of the award, Lexmark has donated $5,000 to PAWS on Mayes' behalf.

Mayes is also a member of the Bluegrass Cycling Club where she volunteers with the Horsey Hundred bike ride, which raises money to purchase bikes for underprivileged children, and the MS-150 Bike the Bluegrass that benefits those who suffer from multiple sclerosis.

Mayes is a key organizer of the Georgetown Kite and Culture Festival, which is a family weekend event that celebrates cultural awareness and diversity. The festival attracted more than 8,200 people in 2007. Mayes also played the piano for patients at the Markey Cancer Center during the holiday season.

Mayes volunteers for numerous Lexmark events including Women in Engineering Career Day, University of Kentucky (UK) Engineering Day Open House, and the UK BEST high school program. As an advocate for volunteering, Mayes posts volunteer opportunities on her office door every day to give co- workers information on how they too can engage themselves in the community.

"Lexmark created this award to honor employees who are making a difference in their community," said Jeri L. Isbell, Lexmark vice president of human resources. "Jessica's dedication is truly exemplary, and we are pleased to recognize her commitment and provide support to PAWS through our donation."

Lexmark launched the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2004 in conjunction with its Volunteer Time Off (VTO) Program. The Volunteer of the Year Award is designed to encourage and recognize volunteerism among Lexmark employees worldwide as part of the company's commitment to corporate citizenship.

Each year, an employee is selected from nominees worldwide to receive the award. In recognition of the employee's volunteer commitment, Lexmark donates $5,000 to a nonprofit organization or school selected by the recipient.

The VTO Program provides time away from work for employees to volunteer. It allows Lexmark's U.S. full-time employees up to three days of paid time away from work annually to volunteer in their local community. Part-time employees receive up to one-and-a-half days annually.

It is ironic, but perhaps not unexpected, that many organizations who want the benefits of using an Agile approach to deliver software use a waterfall approach to adopting Agile practices: they form plans, they set milestones, and they measure progress by how many teams they have engaged. Old habits die hard, but like most waterfall software projects, most waterfall-style Agile adoption efforts fail to produce the results desired. The problem is that to get the results they want, they have to ch...
