JDSU Reports That Its Myers-Briggs-based Program Increases Job Effectiveness for 98% of Participants

Harnessing cultural transformation to help the company scale, JDSU identifies $20M-plus in savings

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --  CPP, Inc. (CPP.com), the exclusive publisher of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) assessments and family of products, announced the results of its work with JDSU, the leading innovator in developing optical products and advanced technologies for the telecom, datacom, laser, and anti-counterfeiting markets. JDSU  implemented a new program based on the MBTI assessment designed to scale its innovation by aligning the company's general population with executive strategy.

JDSU aimed to improve the productivity of its own employees, and achieve a level of efficiency on par with what they provide for their customers' online networks. Sharon Parker, Vice President of Human Resources, realized that JDSU offered no consistent, company-wide management training and saw an opportunity to leverage the Human Resources department as a strategic partner to bring about effective change through cultural transformation.

"Managers are the linchpin between an organization's leaders and its workforce," said Michael Segovia, CPP's lead certification trainer. "Many managers had been promoted on the basis of their technical proficiencies, but they had not received the training they needed to create a team culture that aligned with the leadership's organizational goals."

JDSU created "Managing at JDSU: Empowerment Camp," a program consisting of 60 hours of facilitated classroom training over a 12-week period, with the Myers-Briggs assessment at the core of its curriculum as a tool for learning strategic influence. The camp also heavily leverages MBTI-based insights and principles from CPP's Introduction to Type® and Teams booklet to instill self-awareness in team members, which CPP's Research Director Rich Thompson described in Harvard Business Review as a "foundation for effective leadership." As a result, JDSU reported that the program:

  • Identified potential savings of more than $20 million to JDSU's bottom line
  • Provided training for nearly 300 managers in just two years, with 98% of participants agreeing that the program improved their effectiveness in their jobs at JDSU
  • Gave JDSU employees a common language they could use to discuss interpersonal issues and improve decision-making
  • Increased support from senior level executives across diverse business units for participants, and managers were able to secure additional funding for projects that executives found especially compelling

"The Empowerment Camp not only provided participants with the opportunity to explore their teams' dynamics, but through MBTI-generated insights they were able to also learn how to harness personality differences to create greater balance in the way they approach challenges," said Segovia. "We're thrilled with the success of JDSU's Empowerment Camp and look forward to working with more organizations in the future to drive real, measurable business value through cultural change."
